Go,no-go gauge a bust! 23.2.2018
I am a competitive Bullseye pistol shooter and have been reloading for ~10 years. I recently ran into some issues with my 45 ACP reloads, in that they would not cycle in my Golt Gold Cup.I was searching for go, no-go gauges and came across this item. While the majority of the reloading I do for pistols is in 45 ACP, I also reload 9mm and 45 Long Colt. So the prospect of having these calibers in one tool was very appealing. Generally, I would just by the L.E. Wilson gage and be done with it. In this case, I bought both. If the Lyman item worked it would certainly save me some space on my workbench.
The item was packaged well and looked like it would hold up to a lot of use. I had ~20 - 45 ACP loaded rounds, that would not cycle in my pistol, ready to test. I was surprised that all of the rounds easily fit into the Lyman gauge. I turned the gauge over and all of them fell out with ease also. At this point, I took apart my pistol and dropped each round into the barrel. Each round would not completely seat in the chamber. I tried these rounds with another 45 that I had with the same results (Dan Wesson PM-EXP). I then tried the same rounds in the L.E. Wilson gage. Each round would NOT seat into the gage, they were ~3/8 - 1/4 inch shy of seating properly (which is what I would expect since they didn't seat in my barrels). I did the same procedure with rounds that fit perfectly in my pistols. Each gauge, the Lyman and L.E. Wilson, "passed" the loaded rounds with ease.
Takeaway: do not buy this gauge. The SAAMI accuracies that it indicated it is machined to are in question. Right now this is a $30 paperweight. Save your money and buy a L.E. Wilson gage, if you need reliability and consistency, it is well worth it.
NOTE: I addressed the issue with my "failed" 45 ACP rounds but running them through a Lee Carbide Factory Crimp Die. This die sizes the round while it crimps the bullet. Also a good investment.
